Did anybody watch this yesterday? I was lucky enough to catch the BBC web stream, so below is my little review about the gig...
Overall I think it was a very fine performance, but played to the wrong type of audience. In the front of probably 100,000 people (of which 90% waited the "Sunshine in a Bag" song), Gorillaz felt a bit out of place for much of the time (maybe they could have fixed this by adding a couple of more hits from their back catalogue ("19-2000" anyone?) or at least move "Feel Good Inc" or "Clint Eastwood" from the bottom to the middle of the set.) I understand it may have felt "boring" for many people there.
It wasn't musically flawless; there was nothing wrong with the core band, but it was some of the guest artists who weakened the songs with their poor timings, PLUS the sound mixer controlling the mic volumes. Damon's voice was exceptionally good however - perhaps stronger than at the Glasto last year. I felt he "saved" many of the tracks like "Some Kind Of Nature" (Lou Reed's vocal being too low in the mix) and "Cloud Of Unknowing" where Bobby did not know when to start sing.
The "Pirate Jet" singalong felt spot on with projected lyrics: Damon knew nobody would know the track (and more importantly its message), so he aided until everybody got it.
Last year, when Blur headlined Glasto, I genuinely felt the band was too small for the massive gigs like this and the same goes absolutely for Gorillaz. They ain't massive giants like Muse and U2, but it goes without saying they're far more interesting and suitable for the smaller venues crowded by the real fans.
And finally, some excellent pics from BBC's Glastonbury website:

Yup, and there are also a DVD and full HD broadcast available on Dimeadozen... I've been trying to complete the HD one for the past three days, but I think it'll be worth the wait. |
